He who believes in me will never thirst

The Bible makes it very clear that the Gospel message is for everyone.  Everyone has a need:

James 2:10 (NASB):  For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

God saw that need, and has issued an invitation to everyone, everywhere:

Acts 17:30-31 (NASB): "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,  because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."

And the motivation for that invitation was love.  God's love for everyone:

John 3:16  (NASB): "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. "

He who believes in me will never thirst

Webster's dictionary says to believe is to have trust or confidence in.  To believe in Jesus is to have trust or confidence that He died for your sin, the just one (Jesus) for the unjust sinners (us).

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NASB), speaking of the Gospel, says, "...that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,..."

1 Peter 3:18 (NASB): For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God,

He who believes in me will never thirst

It is necessary to believe in the right thing - the right person.  The Bible issues a warning that it is possible to believe in a Jesus not taught in the Bible.

2 Corinthians 11:4 (KJV): For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached,...ye might well bear with him.

So who is the real Jesus? A lot about Him can be found in Philippians 2:5-11 (NASB):

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.  Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

We can conclude from these verses that the real Jesus...:

  1. ...before becoming a man, existed in heaven in the form of God
  2. ...became a man (the Christmas story)
  3. ...died on the cross for our sins
  4. ...was raised from the dead
  5. ...ascended back to heaven
  6. ...will one day have all bow before Him as ruler and judge

He who believes in me will never thirst

Jesus used our bodies' craving for water as an example of the spiritual vacuum (craving) we all have that only He can fill.  When we believe in the Jesus of the Bible, the good news that He lived, died, and rose again to make us acceptable to God, His Spirit comes into our hearts and satisfies our deepest needs in much the same way that water satisfies our physical thirst.

2 Corinthians 1:22 (NASB) says, "who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge."  The Greek dictionary says of the word translated "pledge"- "Part of the purchase-money or property given in advance as security for the rest." This is the same idea as what we call "earnest" money.

Because He put His Spirit in our hearts, we know that the rest of His promises are going to come true.  That includes eternal life in heaven with Him.  He give us peace with God and the peace of God.  He calls us His children - Romans 8:16 (NASB): The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.

He who believes in me will never thirst

If you have never trusted in Christ, do you feel the thirst (craving) to do so? He is calling you, drawing you to Himself, as He said in John 12:32 - "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself."

If you recognize your need today, all you need to do is ask him for this living water.  Direct your thoughts and words to God.  Tell Him that you agree with Him that you have a need, that you are unjust.  Believe in Jesus, the Jesus of the Bible, the just one, and ask Him to save you.  Commit to following His leadership in your life and through the Holy Spirit, He will enable you to do so.
